The Role of Government

Sadly, our elected representatives don't even agree on what the role of government is, which means they can't even agree on why they are there. It would be best for the people if they would not pass any more legislation until they knew what it was for.

The best approach is to look at the role of government from the perspective of the people who set it up, our founders. In our Declaration of Independence we have the purpose of government stated quite plainly, let's take a look at it.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. --That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,,,

We can plainly see that the primary purpose of government is to protect the rights of the people. Our founders restated this in the Preamble to the Constitution.

The first protection is to "establish Justice".

The second protection is to "insure domestic tranquility".

The third protection is to "provide for the common defense".

  • Our Government should have a strong military to protect us from foreign powers.
  • Our Government should protect us internally with national agencies like the FBI and provide some support for local protection agencies like police and fire.

The fourth protection is to "promote the general welfare"

The fifth protection is to "secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity"

Our country was strong because the people were united. Current trends are making us weak. One trend is a push for diversity. We need to understand that diversity, without a core of unity, is division.
